This is merely opinion, of course, but I’ve found that if you truly know nothing about a subject, the “For Dummies” series is the better one. (The margin is not a wide one, however.)
Depending on the subject matter, they are both reasonably good.
They both are very helpful. BTW *The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Toltec Wisdom* is an amazingly helpful book, and highly recommended. I’ve read thousands, and this one, if you’re ready for it, is unusually insightful )
I used to be an editor for those books in the 90s. (I worked for the CIG publisher and then switched over to the Dummies publisher.) I’ve read lots of those books, and they’re very similar in quality and style. Both series are good.

Looking at my bookshelf, I see more Complete Idiot’s Guides than For Dummies books, so either I like Complete Idiots better or I’m a complete idiot
